SUMMARY:Big Man! Book Launch and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Black History Month event! \nWe’re celebrating the launch of Dean Atta’s first novel\, Big Man. \nBig Man follows the life of Big\, a middle-aged Black British gay man who lives a gentle life with his boyfriend\, Little\, in their home in East London. Big and Little enjoy evenings out and group holidays with friends\, as much as practising yoga together at home and running side by side along the Hackney canals. \nBig came of age in the club scene under the watchful eye of Mother\, an African American trans woman who made a home and name for herself in London\, her house a refuge for wayward queer youths like Big. When he finds out Mother is releasing a memoir\, the two reconnect after decades of distance\, and Big finds himself having to confront a long-repressed assault that opens old – and new – wounds. \nA tender\, daring novel full of gentle humour\, Big Man explores themes of identity\, aging\, sex\, family and trauma\, turning a lens on what it means to age as a queer person\, while being a double-edged love letter to the people and places that make us. \nAfter the launch\, stick around for a fun Q&A session hosted by the amazing Zoe Cornibert from the Black Circle Podcast. It’s a great chance to hear more about the book and chat with Dean Atta himself.

SUMMARY:Jan Van Eyck - The Portraits
DESCRIPTION:A lecture presented by The Arts Society Ealing \nThis November\, the National Gallery in London will attempt something that has never been done before and by the institution’s own assessment\, will never be done again: it will gather in a single building all nine surviving independent portraits by Jan van Eyck. The paintings are scattered across five museums in four countries – London\, Vienna\, Berlin\, Bruges\, Sibiu – and several have not travelled in decades. \nThe Arnolfini Portrait has left the National Gallery only once in over a century. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has agreed to lend both its Van Eycks simultaneously for the first time in its history. That such an assembly requires the word “only” to describe nine objects tells us something about the scale of loss that six centuries have inflicted on the work of a single painter – and something about the preciousness of what remains. \nThe modern visitor\, arriving at Trafalgar Square in late November\, will likely bring with them a set of assumptions about what a portrait is. A portrait\, we tend to think\, captures a likeness. It records how someone looked. It is a picture of a face. These assumptions are not wrong\, exactly\, but they are radically incomplete when applied to the nine panels that will occupy the National Gallery’s rooms. To understand what Van Eyck achieved\, you must recover a world in which a painted face was not a picture but a device – a legal document\, a diplomatic instrument\, a store of status\, a surrogate for the living body. The question this talk pursues is not ‘what do these portraits look like?’ but rather: what were they for? \nLecturer\, Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff has her own company – Art Historical London –  offering art historical lectures\, museum visits\, courses\, tours\, travel and events from Amsterdam\, London and New York\, and since 2020 online.  She also teaches on the public programme of the Dulwich Picture Gallery\, for Roundtable\, the Timken Museum and the New York Adventure Club in the States\, for Academy Travel and the Art Academy in Sydney and for a number of institutions in the Netherlands. \nThis lecture ties in with the forthcoming exhibition at the National Gallery. \nDoors open at 6:45pm\, and lecture starts at 7:30pm. \nVisitors are welcome to attend at £10 per lecture (£3 for students); payment can be made by card on the evening.

SUMMARY:Hitler’s Volksgemeinschaft (National Community): Inclusion and Exclusion
DESCRIPTION:Nazi Germany sought to reshape German society\, uniting those deemed to belong to Hitler’s vision of a ‘national community’ while persecuting and excluding those who did not. Join historian Dr Lisa Pine\, Fellow of the Institute of Historical Research\, University of London\, as she explores how the Nazi regime sought to transform the nation through propaganda\, political ideology\, and social policy. \nThe lecture will examine the devastating consequences of this vision of national unity for Jews\, Roma\, Sinti and other persecuted groups. Whether you’re interested in Nazi Germany\, the history of propaganda\, or the relationship between society and political power\, this promises to be a fascinating evening. We hope you’ll join us.
