SUMMARY:More Than Words: Writing the Wrongs
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition spotlights the remarkable work of pioneering activists\, publishers and bookshop owners Jessica and Eric Huntley in this exhibition of photographs and book covers. \nGuyanese-born Jessica and Eric Huntley were radical political activists who came to England in the late 1950s. \nSettling in Ealing they founded Bogle-L’Ouverture Publications which celebrated Black culture and history\, producing a wide range of publications\, including seminal texts by writers from across the African diaspora. Later Eric and Jessica opened the Bogle-L’Ouverture bookshop – an important cultural hub. \nJessica was deeply passionate about young people’s education. She galvanised support to counter the rise of unfair practices that saw Black pupils classified as sub-normal and excluded from schools. She and Eric were also instrumental in developing the template for Black Supplementary Schools.

SUMMARY:Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons
DESCRIPTION:The summer exhibition will see a multitude of works by British artist Clare Woods RA installed throughout the historic manor and its galleries. \nHaving initially trained as a sculptor\, Woods’ understanding of sculptural forms underpin her paintings\, collages and prints. Her recent works have been preoccupied with destabilising traditional art historical genres such as portraiture\, landscape and still life. \nHovering between abstraction and figuration\, her paintings are characterised by fluid mark-making and vibrant colours. \nUnder The Dome (2024)\, one of the biggest works in the show\, draws its composition from a photo Woods took of the iconic Temperate House at Kew Gardens\, London. In this scene\, the viewer is positioned amongst the luscious tropical plants\, peering up at the spiralling Victorian staircase. This glasshouse provides a sanctuary for some of the world’s rarest and most threatened plants. Woods became fascinated by this manmade ecosystem and how it protects flora that otherwise could not survive the UK’s cold climate. Here\, the elaborate glass structure becomes a metaphor for the thin veneer between life and death. \nPitzhanger’s parkland setting\, historic interiors\, and stained-glass windows are sources of inspiration for Woods’ new works in the exhibition. Evoking the passage of time\, they invite the viewer to consider the fleeting nature of life. When she was developing the concept for the show\, Woods noted that absence and presence are not just abiding themes in her own works\, but also powerful elements which characterise the manor and its galleries. Sir John Soane is ever-present in the building’s light-filled spaces and unique architecture\, yet also absent following his death almost two centuries ago and the relocation of his collections to his central London town house – now the Sir John Soane’s Museum in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

SUMMARY:Islamic Geometric Drawing with Samira Mian Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Join Samira Mian for these sessions creating beautiful Islamic geometric art\, part of the new Healing Ealing programme. \n\n\n\nAcross this series of six 90-minute sessions\, Samira Mian will guide you step by step through the construction of a range of Islamic geometric patterns from across the Islamic lands. \nEach session works as a stand-alone workshop\, while the series is designed to progressively build skills\, confidence and understanding from one session to the next. \nWorking with a compass and straightedge\, the same simple tools used by generations of artisans and geometers for centuries\, discover how intricate patterns emerge from layers of carefully constructed circles and lines. Samira will help you become familiar with the tools and materials before guiding you through each construction. \nAlong the way\, develop practical skills for extending and repeating patterns\, both by drawing fuller geometric constructions and by learning how to transfer and tile designs using tracing paper. \nYou will also have the opportunity to explore colour and creative techniques to develop patterns further\, transforming geometric drawings into beautiful artworks. \nSession outline \n\nSession 1 – Sixfold Curves\nSession 2 – Sixfold Stars\nSession 3 – Eightfold Stars\nSession 4 – Exploring Eightfold from Morocco & Spain\nSession 5 –Eightfold Rosette\nSession 6 – Twelvefold Rosette\n\n  \nSamira Mian uses her background in mathematics and education to share her knowledge and artistic passion. Breathing new life into the centuries-old technique of straight edge and compasses rigorous geometry to recreate geometric patterns from the Islamic Lands. \nShe researches and analyses the geometry of these patterns to create intriguing and beautiful art and teach others too. She’s not necessarily a traditional artist and enjoys working intuitively\, reimagining these great patterns with a fresh eye in contemporary colours and styles. For the last 10 years\, she has regularly led workshops in the UK and abroad as well as reaching many online via social media\, Patreon\, Udemy and her YouTube channel. She loves opportunities that come her way in meeting and working with a wide range of people\, brands and organisations. \nTo share this intellectual and beautiful heritage from the Islamic Lands and the immensely satisfying pursuits they involve with the widest possible audience is a dream come true. \nPart of Healing Ealing\nThese workshops are part of the Healing Ealing programme\, a series of sessions at the recently reopened Perceval House led by some of the borough’s leading creatives. Join us for Healing Ealing\, exploring how taking part in creative activity can improve your wellbeing. \n\n\n\n\n
