SUMMARY:Jan Van Eyck - The Portraits
DESCRIPTION:A lecture presented by The Arts Society Ealing \nThis November\, the National Gallery in London will attempt something that has never been done before and by the institution’s own assessment\, will never be done again: it will gather in a single building all nine surviving independent portraits by Jan van Eyck. The paintings are scattered across five museums in four countries – London\, Vienna\, Berlin\, Bruges\, Sibiu – and several have not travelled in decades. \nThe Arnolfini Portrait has left the National Gallery only once in over a century. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has agreed to lend both its Van Eycks simultaneously for the first time in its history. That such an assembly requires the word “only” to describe nine objects tells us something about the scale of loss that six centuries have inflicted on the work of a single painter – and something about the preciousness of what remains. \nThe modern visitor\, arriving at Trafalgar Square in late November\, will likely bring with them a set of assumptions about what a portrait is. A portrait\, we tend to think\, captures a likeness. It records how someone looked. It is a picture of a face. These assumptions are not wrong\, exactly\, but they are radically incomplete when applied to the nine panels that will occupy the National Gallery’s rooms. To understand what Van Eyck achieved\, you must recover a world in which a painted face was not a picture but a device – a legal document\, a diplomatic instrument\, a store of status\, a surrogate for the living body. The question this talk pursues is not ‘what do these portraits look like?’ but rather: what were they for? \nLecturer\, Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff has her own company – Art Historical London –  offering art historical lectures\, museum visits\, courses\, tours\, travel and events from Amsterdam\, London and New York\, and since 2020 online.  She also teaches on the public programme of the Dulwich Picture Gallery\, for Roundtable\, the Timken Museum and the New York Adventure Club in the States\, for Academy Travel and the Art Academy in Sydney and for a number of institutions in the Netherlands. \nThis lecture ties in with the forthcoming exhibition at the National Gallery. \nDoors open at 6:45pm\, and lecture starts at 7:30pm. \nVisitors are welcome to attend at £10 per lecture (£3 for students); payment can be made by card on the evening.

SUMMARY:Islamic Geometric Drawing with Samira Mian Session 3
DESCRIPTION:Join Samira Mian for these sessions creating beautiful Islamic geometric art\, part of the new Healing Ealing programme. \n\n\n\nAcross this series of six 90-minute sessions\, Samira Mian will guide you step by step through the construction of a range of Islamic geometric patterns from across the Islamic lands. \nEach session works as a stand-alone workshop\, while the series is designed to progressively build skills\, confidence and understanding from one session to the next. \nWorking with a compass and straightedge\, the same simple tools used by generations of artisans and geometers for centuries\, discover how intricate patterns emerge from layers of carefully constructed circles and lines. Samira will help you become familiar with the tools and materials before guiding you through each construction. \nAlong the way\, develop practical skills for extending and repeating patterns\, both by drawing fuller geometric constructions and by learning how to transfer and tile designs using tracing paper. \nYou will also have the opportunity to explore colour and creative techniques to develop patterns further\, transforming geometric drawings into beautiful artworks. \nSession outline \n\nSession 1 – Sixfold Curves\nSession 2 – Sixfold Stars\nSession 3 – Eightfold Stars\nSession 4 – Exploring Eightfold from Morocco & Spain\nSession 5 –Eightfold Rosette\nSession 6 – Twelvefold Rosette\n\n  \nSamira Mian uses her background in mathematics and education to share her knowledge and artistic passion. Breathing new life into the centuries-old technique of straight edge and compasses rigorous geometry to recreate geometric patterns from the Islamic Lands. \nShe researches and analyses the geometry of these patterns to create intriguing and beautiful art and teach others too. She’s not necessarily a traditional artist and enjoys working intuitively\, reimagining these great patterns with a fresh eye in contemporary colours and styles. For the last 10 years\, she has regularly led workshops in the UK and abroad as well as reaching many online via social media\, Patreon\, Udemy and her YouTube channel. She loves opportunities that come her way in meeting and working with a wide range of people\, brands and organisations. \nTo share this intellectual and beautiful heritage from the Islamic Lands and the immensely satisfying pursuits they involve with the widest possible audience is a dream come true. \nPart of Healing Ealing\nThese workshops are part of the Healing Ealing programme\, a series of sessions at the recently reopened Perceval House led by some of the borough’s leading creatives. Join us for Healing Ealing\, exploring how taking part in creative activity can improve your wellbeing.

For 20 years\, Maliphant has worked closely with pioneering lighting designer Michael Hulls to explore and realise these ideas. Russell Maliphant and Michael Hulls are both Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells. \nRussell Maliphant Dance Company was established in 1996 as the framework to initiate productions and to work with our own ensemble of dancers. Since that time we have received two Olivier awards\, three South Bank Show awards and five Critics’ Circle National Dance awards for best modern choreography and one for best independent company\, amongst many other national and international awards and nominations. \nThese workshops are part of Healing Ealing\, a series of sessions at the recently reopened Perceval House led by some of the borough’s leading creatives. SUMMARY:Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde
DESCRIPTION:Cult British horror podcast General Witchfinders announces halloween eve screening of hammer classic Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde! \nGeneral Witchfinders\, the top-ten UK film history podcast (selected for inclusion in the British Library’s National Sound Archive)\, brings a special Halloween Eve screening and live podcast show to ActOne Cinema. \nThe main feature is Roy Ward Baker’s Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971). Written by Brian Clemens (Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter)\, the film takes a wild turn on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale by introducing a female alter ego\, weaving historical figures Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare directly into the plot. Starring Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick\, it stands as one of Hammer’s most ingenious and atmospheric adaptations. \nFollowing the film\, hosts Ross Cleaver\, James Randall and Jon Pountney take to the stage. Bringing a mountain of facts mixed with an obsession for the obscure side of British culture. The trio will examine the cast\, crew and production history\, following any unusual side roads their conversation leads them down. Expect a lively mix of trivia\, dark comedy and pop-culture tangents. \nHoused in the restored Edwardian building of the Old Library in Acton\, ActOne Cinema provides a distinct\, character-rich setting for a night focused on vintage British screen history. \nNo ads or trailers – film starts at 7.30pm. \nNearest Transport: Acton Central (Overground\, 5-minute walk) / Acton Town (District & Piccadilly lines\, 10-minute walk) \nBook now!
