Ealing artists descend on Hampstead!

Three people in the centre with their back to the camera look at some art on an exhibition wall. Around them are lots of colourful paintings.

Hampstead Affordable Art Fair showcases our own

Last weekend, we caught up with some Ealing-based artists who were showcasing their work outside of the borough – at the Hampstead Affordable Art Fair. Taking place at Hampstead Heath from Wednesday 6th May to Sunday 10th May – the room was buzzing and there were over 100 stands to browse, representing groups of artists and galleries from around the world.

Over at stand F9, that’s where we caught up with Alex Ebdon and Shalini Bharadwaj where they were exhibiting for their art collective: By/Design Collective.

Alex told me about his dreamy landscapes where he encourages viewers to delve into their own histories and emotions. He creates a mixture of more traditional landscapes with  trees and fields with stunning white clouds filling the sky – as well as more abstract landscapes using blocks of colour to draw you into a feeling rather than a distinct place. Alex said that he started with the traditional paintings, so he can usually finish them in one sitting, whereas the abstract ones have been more of an exploration and take longer to finish.

Shalini is a mixed media artist. Inspired by her Indian heritage, her work seeks to evoke deep emotional connection. She draws on cultural and personal associations – memories of travel, people, places, objects and childhood nostalgia. Her visual narratives create a dialogue between image and memory. Working in mixed media, her painting explore the interplay of light and shadow, often contrasted with delicate translucent forms.

Her work is rapidly gaining international recognition among collectors of South Asian art. In 2025, two of her artworks were sold at auction at Banhams, London.

Just across the way, Sarah Knight was exhibiting her paintings, part of Skylark Galleries. She uses acrylics, oil, pastel and collage. Sarah studied illustration and more recently has been developing her painting and printmaking. Sarah has exhibited at art fairs, with galleries, in pop-up shows and touring exhibitions. The more she gets her artwork into the world, the more she feels compelled to create.

We have so many wonderful creatives in our West London borough. You can explore many of them on our Creatives Directory.
