Celebrating the art of the Martin brothers

martinware map update

A series of projects, delivered by Ealing Council, is celebrating the unique ceramics of the Martin brothers. Funded by the Arts Council, the programme has given Southall and Ealing borough residents new ways to engage with ceramic practice and learn about the Council’s collection of Martinware.

Known for their grotesque designs, including their famous Wally bird ceramics, the Martin brothers are considered the first studio potters in the UK. The Council owns a significant collection of work by the brothers, with pieces on view at Southall Library and Gunnersbury Park Museum.

The project includes a free Martinware Map, outlining sites of significance in Southall to the Martin brothers, is available from Southall and Ealing Central libraries and for online download here.

A VR exhibition, Grotesque Clay: Uncovering the Martinware Collection, created in partnership with Artification, includes works from the collection not seen for more than 15 years.
