Ealing’s next generation of film talent

Talented young creatives in the borough were among the winners at a west London film competition.

On Thursday 9 May, creatives from across west London packed the Ealing Picturehouse for the world premiere of entries in the 2024 West London Creative Enterprize Zones film competition.

The team from Bollo Brook youth centre, in Stratford Road, Acton, won the community award. The University of West London also received an honourable mention for technical excellence.

The screening was the culmination of 5 weeks of hard work by teams representing colleges, universities and community groups across west London.

Each team was mentored by an expert film maker for 5 days. They used professional equipment to riff on the topic: ‘West London – A Great Place to be Creative’. Using their imagination and creativity, they planned, scripted, shot and edited their short films, gaining both technical knowledge and first hand experience.

Ealing Council’s Bollo Brook Youth Centre won with their emotional ‘Bollo Studios: The Hidden Sounds of South Acton’.

For some of the young creatives this was their first time using professional equipment. Megan O’Connor, who attends the youth centre and was part of the film-making crew, said: “The opportunity to edit, which I built upon through love of animation, and to colour grade using colour theory was a really enjoyable experience.”

The University of West London received an honourable mention for technical excellence in ‘West London: A Journey Through ASMR’.

Winners will spend time on virtual production stages of Sony at Pinewood and ARRI in Uxbridge.

The borough is part of the Mayor of London’s Creative Enterprise Zones programme and, in partnership with Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation (OPDC), has the potential to create thousands of jobs in related industries, along with affordable studio space.
