We popped in and had a chat with Karl, General Manager, who grew up in the borough. Here’s what he had to say:
What’s a day in the life of like for you?
A day in the life at Kiosk can vary as a General Manager! I get to Kiosk an hour before the venue opens to prepare the cafe, bar and the rest of Kiosk for success, ensuring it is presentable and ready for customers. As the day goes on, I find myself serving customers, answering emails and customer enquiries, organising events and supporting my front of house team and the vendors who operate in Kiosk. I’m always looking for something new and exciting to introduce to Kiosk and the wider community of my hometown, whether it be a new item for my menu, a new event/workshop or something as simple as a new lamp!
What do you enjoy about your job?
What I enjoy most about working at Kiosk is meeting new people or finding common ground with the customers who come in. Since I have grown up in Greenford my whole life, it’s always nice to meet new people who have lived in the area and reminisce about old memories. My mentor was from Bolton and whenever he heard anyone with a northern accent, he would immediately strike up a conversation and end up talking for what felt like hours about up north. I now find myself doing the same with customers who come into Kiosk that live or grew up in Greenford.
From my days of working in pubs, the customers and regulars are what truly bring the place to life. With Kiosk Greenford Quay, there is more to it – something special that took me a while to figure out. It’s not just the customers that make this place, it is also the people who operate here.
Our style is similar in cloth to Lower Stable Street Market, where our older sibling, Kiosk N1C resides. But we are essentially an indoor version! Running a market is very community-based.
I was taught that when you prepare to open your business for the day, you are setting yourself up for success. And watching others setting up for the day with that same shared goal in the same environment is a joy to see.
Lunchtime on a Friday or Saturday is certainly my favourite time when I’m at Kiosk, because everyone from the food and retail vendors is hectically setting up their businesses for the day. Then, I witness our customers scanning the vendors’ menus, hearing the sizzling of food on a griddle or milk being steamed with our music playlist on in the background while people laugh and chat. The best!
Who is Kiosk Greenford Quay for?
Kiosk Greenford Quay is for everyone. It’s all about trying something new. Whether it’s searching for something new to eat, meet new people or try something completely different! Kiosk Greenford Quay will always have something for anyone and everyone to try.
How do you work with the community?
We support the local community in many ways. From supporting local businesses to supporting the people of the community itself.
We offer a unique concept of supporting small, local businesses in the area such as our food and retail vendors, as well as our new craft market ‘1st+Third’, which provides a platform for local artisan traders to showcase their craft.
We hire locally. Myself and my team all reside in Greenford.
We host many workshops for the local community to participate in at affordable prices. Such as a bi-weekly dance class hosted by Melitta Siomos of Pura Nights, themed Sip N’ Paint nights hosted by Elaine Buchanan and arts and craft workshops curated by Vanisha Patel, Founder of Artzenity.
How can locals get involved?
By visiting us, visiting our website or following us on Instagram!
We’re eager to show and welcome everyone to Kiosk Greenford Quay.
What’s coming up?
We are showing every England Game for the Fifa World Cup, as well as all the knockout games (that do not start at midnight-2 am)!
We will also be celebrating South Asian Heritage Month with a range of fun and exciting events happening inside Kiosk Greenford Quay throughout July.
We have our one-year anniversary coming up in September which I am in the process of organising. We will also be going all out for Christmas this year. Watch the space (literally)!
What’s next?
Greenford Quay is a developing community, and I hope that Kiosk Greenford Quay develops along with it. I’m very fortunate to be in my current position, having grown up in Greenford my whole life. I aim for Kiosk Greenford Quay to become a B Corp Certified business by 2027 and maintain that certification for as long as possible. I also aim for Kiosk Greenford Quay to welcome more people from the wider community, and wider London.
Thanks to Karl for taking the time to meet us. We look forward to all your upcoming events.
